Pattern and Syllabus

NBDE part I has 400 multiple-choice questions emphasizing basic sciences:

  1. Human Anatomy, Embryology, and Histology

  2. Biochemistry and Physiology

  3. Microbiology and Pathology

  4. Dental Anatomy and Occlusion.

NBDE is a lengthy examination which may last up to eight hours including breaks.  The exam is done in two sets of 200 questions with around three and half hours for each section. A break between the section for not more than one hour is allowed.

NBDE  part II requires two days and focuses on clinical dental topics:

  1. Endodontics
  2. Operative Dentistry
  3. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Pain Control
  4. Oral Diagnosis
  5. Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry
  6. Patient Management, including Behavioral Science, Dental Public Health and Occupational Safety
  7. Periodontics
  8. Pharmacology
  9. Prosthodontics

On day 1, as with part 1 of test, it will be a 400 questions MCQ type, timing at around 7 hours. An hour for lunch break (optional) can be taken after first section of 200 questions (3.5 hours).

Day 2 will be a three and half hour session dealing with a hundred patient case problems.
